What’s the Link between Vitamin D and Breast Cancer?

Vitamin D, the nutrient generated from the sun, not only supports your bone health, but it may also decrease the incidence of breast cancer in women, according to scientists at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

Scientists found that the majority of women with breast cancer have low levels of vitamin D, which may lead to reduced bone mass and greater risk of fractures.

“Vitamin D is essential to maintaining bone health and women with breast cancer have accelerated bone loss due to the nature of hormone therapy and chemotherapy,” says Luke Peppone, Ph.D., a Radiation Oncology professor at Rochester.

The Protective Effect of Vitamin D Against Breast Cancer

Dr. Joseph Mercola, one of the leading natural health experts today, notes that vitamin D is “one of nature’s most potent cancer fighters.”

He explains that your organs convert vitamin D in your bloodstream into calcitrol, the activated form of vitamin D. “Calcitrol can induce a tumor-suppressing protein that can inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells,” Dr. Mercola adds.

Studies also support the nutrient’s protective role in cancer. In fact, a researcher from the State University of New York at Albany injected a potent form of vitamin D into human breast cancer cells, and found that half of them shrank and later died within days.

How to Boost Your Vitamin D Levels to Reduce Your Cancer Risk

Dr. Mercola says that optimizing your vitamin D levels is “one of the simplest, yet most profound things you can do to protect your health.”

The best way to get vitamin D is from regularly exposing your skin to Ultraviolet (UV) B rays found in sunlight. But if you struggle with getting enough sunlight during certain seasons of the year, Dr. Mercola advises using a safe tanning bed, which eliminates dangerous electromagnetic field emissions. The particular tanning bed should provide UV B rays to help your body produce vitamin D naturally.
